| Description | Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disabling disease with variable manifestations; these have signi„cant adverse effects on the affected individuals, their families, and society. Many affected individuals also experience comorbid diseases and complications that potentially inuence health outcomes. In order to optimize rehabilitation programs and outcomes, a comprehensive approach is needed; one that accounts for these comorbid conditions. This requires knowledge of which conditions are most frequent in MS and their inuences on outcomes; the purpose of this chapter is to review available data on this subject. After reading this chapter, you will be able to: 1. Identify the most common physical and mental comorbidities experienced by persons with MS, 2. Recognize the impact of comorbidity on disability and quality of life, and 3. Understand how the presence of one or more comorbidities may inuence rehabilitation strategies in MS.
