| Description | One of our aims in this chapter is to establish certain elementary facts about the system of integers that we need in order to develop and illustrate the material of later chapters. These facts include simple results on congruences (introduced in §14) and, on a more fundamental level, the well-ordering principle (an absolutely basic property of ℤ, explained in detail in §10) and the division algorithm (§11). The last of these is the fact, suggested by our experience of elementary arithmetic, that, given an integer a and a divisor d (∊ ℕ), we can, in exactly one way, express a in the form a=(QUOTIENT)×d+(REMAINDER) Book Name: Introduction To Abstract Algebra |
