| Description | Attack detection is vital for many DDoS mitigation systems. DDoS detection studies generally focus on determining the presence of an attack in observed network traffic or on distinguishing the attack traffic from the benign traffic. These approaches can be classified as either signature- or anomaly-based. Signature-based approaches look for known patterns in the observed traffic. On the other hand, anomaly-based approaches track sudden and extreme deviations on different network traffic features. Details about attack detection and classification are presented in Chapter 8. In both detection classes, the measured performance of the attack detection approaches depends on the network traffic used for the test. In other words, the performance results of these approaches are valid for the traffic having similar network behavior with test data. Therefore, it is crucial to use the proper test dataset in DDoS attack detection studies. Book Name: Distributed Denial of Service Attacks |
