| Description | Spectral analysis and spectral synthesis deal with the description of translation invariant function spaces on topological groups. The basic building blocks of this description are the exponential functions and exponential monomials. The classical theorem of Laurent Schwartz completely explains the situation on the reals (see Schwartz (1947)): in every translation invariant linear space of complex valued continuous functions on the real line, which is also closed with respect to uniform convergence on compact sets the exponential monomials of the form x ↦ x n e λ x (n is a natural number, λ is a complex number) span a dense subspace. This property is called spectral synthesis of the function space in question. In the past years several new results have been published on this subject on discrete Abelian groups. For a detailed discussion of discrete spectral synthesis see the monograph Székelyhidi (2006) and also the research papers Lefranc (1958); Laczkovich and Székelyhidi (2005, 2007); Székelyhidi and Wilkens (2016, 2017); Székelyhidi (2018).
