| Description | As described in Chapter 1, world electricity production is expected to reach 30,364 TWh by the year 2030 (EIA 2007) (Fig. 2.1a). Major demand and electricity production will increase in developing countries since these countries have high future potential economic and population growth rates accompanied by an increase in the standard of living and demand for consumer goods (Fig. 2.1a, Table 2.1). As a consequence, the anticipated electricity demand will be highest in residential and commercial sectors (Fig. 2.1b). Thus, it is important for developing countries to take special care regarding their energy planning in order to avoid economic, social, and environmental problems. The forecast for the mix of energy sources shows that coal and natural gas will remain the most important fuels for electricity generation throughout the 2004-2030 projection period, totaling 80% of the total increment in world electric power generation (Fig. 2.1c). This emphasizes that the electricity sector will remain the main contributor of global CO2 emissions, followed by the transport sector. Therefore, our goals for the present and following decades must be (1) to substitute coal in the power generation sector with an environmentally friendly energy source, and (2) to implement technological and infrastructural mitigation options to reduce greenhouse gases from the transport sector. If these challenges are not tackled, then global climate change can not be mitigated. 2.2 REGIONAL ELECTRICITY MARKETS AND FORECASTS UNTIL 2030 Book Name: Advances in Subsurface Pollution of Porous Media - Indicators, Processes and Modelling |
