| Description | One of the chief criticisms aimed at modern, liberal theories of the state is that they are insufficiently sensitive to the importance of language and culture and, therefore, that they ignore the role governments should play in maintaining or encouraging cultural diversity. Critics often rest these charges on the importance of cultural and linguistic practices for either personal identity or, relatedly, for maintaining the sense of self-worth of persons. I take up these issues here, focusing first on Michael Sandel's claim that liberalism rests on a mistaken conception of the 'unencumbered' self. In the last section, I consider a family of related arguments by others (Kymlicka, MacIntyre, Tamir, Margalit and Raz), all tending to the thought that maintaining a national or linguistic culture is central to the creation and maintenance of people's sense of self-worth.
