| Description | The case of simulator training for vehicle operators is compelling. Simulators can safely provide trainees with virtual experiences of risky or uncommon challenges that might be encountered in real situations. The use of computers to deliver the simulated experience means that the training scenario is a data-rich environment. These data can be exploited to develop targeted performance evaluation metrics and feedback. In recent years, the areas of use for simulators in operator training have spread considerably from its origins in flight and there are now simulators for car, bus and truck driver training. In this chapter, we explore the research undertaken to examine the use of driving simulators for the training of drivers of road vehicles, especially the use of simulation for training truck drivers, and some of the challenges that must be overcome in the successful delivery of such training.
