| Description | Preliminary results are presented from the first year of an investigation of the effects on polyphagous predator populations of a pyrethroid insecticide applied to winter cereals in the autumn. At. nine sites throughout England and Wales, the numbers of Carabidae caught in pitfall traps on insecticide treated plots (2–5 ha) were reduced on average by about severity percent compared with untreated control plots during a two month period following spray application. Complete recolonization of treated areas occurred by the end of this two month period. At one site, where trapping continued, subsequent summer populations of some autumn-breeding Carabidae and Staphylinidae emerging from pupation on the study plots appeared to be reduced by fifty percent or more but very rapid dispersal across the site following emergence quickly masked this effect. Activity of Linyphiidae on treated plots was initially reduced by about seventy five percent and this reduction persisted until at least early summer across the range of sites. Where trapping continued, spider activity was only restored by a large influx of the two commonest species in May, presumably achieved by ballooning from considerable distances, whilst the activity of other species remained depressed well into summer on the treated area. Difficulties of interpretation in field studies involving highly mobile species on even quite large plots are discussed and the danger of erroneously ascribing greater insecticide susceptibility to less mobile groups is pointed out.
