| Description | When it comes to gamification, at what should management and organization scholars actually be looking? Game elements spring to mind, as they are inherent to definitions of gamification. In this chapter we offer a practical and theoretical exploration of these game elements, being the building blocks of gamification. We review the literature to offer a list of common game elements: points, badges, leaderboards, performance graphs, virtual gifts/items, levels and missions, social games and teamwork, increasing task difficulty/challenges, avatars, and meaningful stories. We subsequently offer key guidelines for these game elements, pertaining to goal setting, matching user goals, roles and types, and failure and flow. We also offer insights into the design process for these game elements, particularly concerning defining objects and mechanics as gamification design elements, meaningful engagement, and user–system interactions, followed by the application of gamification design principles and creation of user interactions and interfaces. We then take a more theoretical step back to discuss the ontological approaches behind game elements, their guidelines, and their design process. We discuss the reductionism common to any approach to game elements but made a distinction between more constrictive and more open reductionism, each with key rhetorically powerful foundations. We finally discuss how easily this reductionism can turn methodological, being a key pitfall. Book Name: Organizational Gamification |
