| Description | NIR spectroscopy has been widely applied in the oil and gas industry for some time already. However, some key topics have to be addressed for successful deployment and application of the technology. From spectra acquisition to modeling through hardware and sampling, all important aspects are covered in this chapter. They explain and detail extremely important steps that are mandatory to avoid unsatisfactory experiences with NIR applications. After a short overview of the regions of interest in NIR spectra, acquisition systems are covered, as well as deployment and installation. The specificities for petroleum products are fully addressed, mentioning also the main difficulties and limitations. Before entering into the modeling methodology, the representativity of samples and available data is discussed. Chemometrics on NIR spectra is then described with a quite high level of details. Major pitfalls to avoid overcoming the problems of poorly performing models (incl. validation) are also listed. The chapter concludes on a typical application of NIR spectroscopy on gasoline blending, with some indication of financial figures that are at stake. Book Name: Handbook of Near-Infrared Analysis |
