| Description | This chapter focuses on enrichment techniques in microcolumn liquid chromatography. In microcolumn liquid chromatography the chromatographic system retention strength gradient can be generated by injection of a suitable modifier together with the sample. Enrichment techniques in gas chromatography are, except for some cases using capillary columns, mostly performed on precolumns. In liquid chromatography enrichment processes are successfully performed directly on the analytic column owing to the low values of diffusion coefficients in the mobile phase. For trace analysis proper enrichment of the sample on precolumns is preferred. The significance of precolumns increases because they can fulfill several functions simultaneously. In most trace analyses it is not possible to select a solvent with a lower elution strength than that of the mobile phase used for separating the components of a mixture. However, even in these circumstances the retention strength of the chromatographic system can be influenced by the contribution of a suitable modifier added to the sample.
