| Description | So far I have shown how the children in my research responded to the narratives we watched and I have explored the range of information from within the text that they drew on to interpret, empathize and predict. However, just to look at this textual information would ignore the active role which I have argued the reader has to play in drawing on prior knowledge, and so the use of such knowledge must also form a central element of my analysis. In this chapter I shall show how these children are using their experience of life to help them to interpret and predict. I shall look at that specialized area of life experience to do with their prior encounters with narrative, their use of intertextuality, and the ways in which this crosses or acknowledges media boundaries. The children's understanding of the ways in which televisual and printed narratives are constructed by other people and of the role of industry will also be considered. Their interest in and knowledge about language as a system will be another factor. Additionally, the extent to which they use all this information either as a set of individuals who happen to be working in a room with others or as a collaborative interpretive community will be an important element of the analysis. As in the case of the textual cue systems, the extent to which children's use of their prior experience either differs between or transcends media is a key element of my analysis.
