| Description | The cardiovascular (CV) examination can be divided arbitrarily into the medical history provided by the caretaker, physical diagnosis focused on CV issues, and diagnostic studies that include imaging, electrocardiography, and clinical laboratory tests. The medical history can reveal evidence of a previously unsuspected heart or vascular abnormality, as well as inform the management of animals with defined CV disease. While there are no specific (pathognomonic) historical signs of heart disease in animals, certain problems raise suspicion for an underlying CV disorder. Taken collectively, the history, physical examination, and appropriate diagnostic studies can exclude or establish the presence of CV disease and define underlying anatomic, pathophysiologic, and etiologic processes. Information obtained from the history and physical examination helps the clinician select and prioritize additional diagnostic studies, with the goals of establishing the diagnosis, staging disease severity, and guiding any indicated therapy.
