| Description | This chapter reviews how anxiety disorders have been conceptualized, the methods and instruments used to assess anxiety, and anxiety disorders most likely to have onset in childhood. The most common treatments for anxiety disorders rely on behavioral and cognitive behavioral methods. Intense feelings of anxiety or panic occur in children with separation anxiety disorder (SAD) when then anticipate separation from their caregiver. Children who refuse to speak in specific social situations despite speaking in other situations are considered to have selective mutism, if their lack of communication is not better explained by a communication disorder, or other disorder. From a developmental perspective, fears are common in childhood and can be predicted to change with age. Increased risk for social phobia has been found in individuals with an inhibited temperament, those with a bias to interpret threat, individuals who experience negative affectivity.
