| Description | Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are the chemicals of global concern due to their ability to bio magnify and bioaccumulate in the environment. Numerous programmes and activities under the Stockholm Convention (SC) have been introduced to provide monitoring data on the traces of the POPs and their regional and global transport. Global monitoring plan (GMP) was set up to evaluate the efficacy of these programmes. Data collected under GMP showed that in Western Europe and Other Groups (WEOG); PCBs, DDTs, aldrin, and chlordane have declined in their concentrations in the atmosphere. Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have also generated the baseline data of POPs like chlordane, DDT, HCB, and PCBs in the air. There is no systematic programme available related to PFOS in water in this region. The Group of Latin America and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC) lack sufficient data and the trend line of POPs in breast milk samples was impossible to set in these regions. In the Asian region, India and Japan have some national monitoring programmes in which data on human blood samples are available. In Egypt and Ethiopia, an extremely high level of PAHs has been detected in the atmosphere due to combustion. Information regarding POP levels in other media are scarce, as no regular monitoring is conducted. The monitoring data from some regions are rich and valuable, but still data from various developing countries are insufficient, due to low-capacity building and other constraints; hence established monitoring stations, developing efficient methods, and instrumentation for further research are the need of the current scenario.
