| Description | This chapter introduces the detailed design strategies for tall buildings and also introduces the deterministic and probabilistic approaches to determine the worst-case fire scenarios. It discusses the fire alarm and communication, and fire and smoke suppression system. Fire safety design of tall buildings requires engineers to use relevant design measures to protect people and property from fire. When designing new buildings or renovating existing buildings, engineers develop the plan for fire protection. Most tall buildings will adopt a phased evacuation regime due to its height. In phased evacuation approach, only people in the immediate vicinity of the fire are evacuated, and thus it allows people in direct danger to make most efficient use of the egress provisions available to them. The chapter discusses the prescriptive and performance-based fire design approaches, followed by a fire risk analysis.
