| Description | Much work has been devoted to the study of the nature and origin of electromagnetic radiation generated by lightning (Proctor, 1982; Uman and Krider, 1982). All the experimental results obtained have been used to compile a synthetic curve (Oetzel and Pierce, 1969) representing the signal level versus frequency with correction for distance. This shows that, as a first approximation, the spectral density for all the lightning phases is inversely proportional to frequency (Figure 1). Selective observations have shown that different phases of the lightning formation make different contributions; in particular, the return-stroke generates the low-frequency components while the VHF-UHF is mainly generated by the intracloud mechanisms and the return-stroke precursors.
