| Description | Cobalt-, nickel-, and iron-based systems under vigorous conditions, or platinum group metals under milder conditions, are useful heterogeneous catalysts for hydrogenation of nitriles to products including primary, secondary, and tertiary amines, and aldehydes and alcohols if water is present; the range of products results from imine intermediates (see below) [1]. The major advantage of the use of homogeneous hydrogenation catalysts (i.e., metal complexes operating in a solution containing substrate, and $H_{2}$, or a suitable hydrogen donor) versus heterogeneous systems is selectivity in product formation [2]. The volume of open literature on homogeneous hydrogenation systems, including those for asymmetric synthesis, decreases in the order olefinic substrates > ketonic substrates > imine substrates [3]. Homogeneous hydrogenation of nitriles is a much more difficult process as exemplified by reports on such selective hydrogenation of olefinic links in various nitrile rubbers [4], and the dearth of publications on effective, homogeneous hydrogenation of nitriles, particularly under mild conditions [5]; to our knowledge, no mechanistic work utilizing kinetic or spectroscopic data has been reported.
