| Description | Despite improved infection-control procedures in many facilities, the frequency of device-related nosocomial infections is rising. The increased availability and use of reusable devices has contributed to this trend. Air travel has made it easier to spread exotic diseases, placing patients at higher risk. Immunocompromised patients represent a large patient population, and they are more vulnerable to infections due to improper cleaning, disinfecting or sterilizing and handling of reusable devices. It is critically important that manufacturers of devices, intended for both single use or reuse, recognize their responsibilities in designing, developing and labeling of these devices. The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) current focus is on device manufacturers. In addition, however, manufacturers of support equipment and chemicals, in concert with each other and the healthcare provider, must work to ensure adequate reprocessing of devices in order to improve infection and disease control.
