| Description | This chapter explores the several dimensions of globalization and discusses the major emerging international trade regimes. It analyses the relationship between trade and economic development and examines the role of multinational enterprises in the international economy. The chapter describes the evolving world financial system, highlighting the European Union euro crisis and presents the forces that operate to expand international activities and financial flows. The Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership are two trade agreements originally involving the United States that exemplify the ongoing trend of reversing the globalization process. It is possible to identify three main types of industrial globalization–internationalization, multinationalization, and transnationalization–the first two of which can have a direct impact on environmental degradation. The most significant trade regimes are the World Trade Organization, the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and various agreements involving countries in Central and South America.
