| Description | New York State contains over 250 municipal sanitary landfills. Although collection and treatment of leachate from these facilities are required by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), many landfills currently do not comply with regulations. Leachate treatment at municipal wastewater treatment facilities is one option for meeting water quality standards. This alternative can be expensive and energy-intensive, particularly for small landfills in rural areas because of the need for leachate transport. On-site treatment eliminates transportation costs, but treatment costs still can be substantial if the common approach of employing aerated lagoons is used. One possible method to reduce cost and energy requirements is to treat the leachate on-site using artificially constructed wetlands. This chapter describes a proposed study to evaluate the feasibility of this approach at the municipal sanitary landfill in Fenton, Broome County, New York.
