| Description | The pollution of the rivers in the Pearl River Delta Region have been studied. The three main tributaries of the Pearl River and seven rivers of the waterway network were surveyed for the organic micro pollutants. Results show rivers in the waterway network were much more contaminated by organics than the three main tributaries. n-Alkanes and phthalates were the most common compounds in waters at the levels of 0.5-337.5 μg/1 and 3.0-503.5 μg/1, respectively. Although P,P'-DDT and BHC(α,δ,γ) had been prohibited for years, the compounds were detected in some rivers and sewage waters. The total concentrations of the chlorinated pesticides were from 0.11 to 1.22 μg/1. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) in the waters were also investigated in the paper.
