| Description | Journal: Nordisk Psykiatrisk Tidsskrift A survey of previous experiences with psychiatric patients reading their personal medical record is presented. Scandinavian and North American trials and practice in this field show that only a few of the patients request their charts when offered (3.2-8.4%). Among reasons for chart requests, patients mention curiosity, need for further information, and suspicion that untrue statements are written. Some authors add that mistrust and the patient's need to control the doctor/patient relationship might be additional motives. Patients' reactions are generally positive, although some studies have reported patients being more upset or pessimistic after reading their records. No serious negative effects of access to records are reported. Only one author advises against even limited access. Finally, the therapeutic exception is discussed along with advantages and disadvantages in an “open-record practice”. It is concluded that letting the psychiatric patient read his own record can only be beneficial for the patient, if it is done under confidential circumstances, considering the psychodynamics of the particular patient/doctor relationship. |
