| Description | The masons, architects, and civic bodies responsible for the construction and design of early modern Dutch asylums were attentive to the functional as well as the decorative aspects of the building process. It is of course well known that Dutch asylums were designed with the household model in mind, with resident directors acknowledged by the titles of father and mother, and so it is not surprising that domestic standards also affected the design and decoration of asylum spaces. The role of ornamental spaces conceived specifically for purpose-built asylums in the Netherlands can be broached through a close examination of the dolhuis in Amsterdam, an institution that originally had a fairly elaborate arrangement of sculptural reliefs and courtyard works. From site to vantage, from facade relief to courtyard statuary, the sculptural program of the Amsterdam dolhuis is thus a critical resource for understanding the spatial economy of the early modern asylum.
