| Description | Spinal anaesthesia has experienced a great increase in use in the last decades. Many needles are available for this procedure but the most commonly used are the so called atraumatic needles. They have a rounded tip with a lateral hole to deliver the anaesthetic. This particular shape guarantee the simple divarication of the dura mater fibers hence a lower degree of trauma. Samples of both human and bovine lumbar dura mater have been used in this study. The samples have been cut to obtain specimens for mechanical testing. The stress-strain tests of the dura in longitudinal an circumferential direction have been performed using a MTS 858 Mini Bionix test machine. No significant difference between human and bovine samples has been noted as regard the maximum stress. To simulate the dura behavior during puncture a purposely designed equipment has been mounted on the MTS machine. The equipment allows to use the dura as the upper wall of a small tank contained a buffered saline physiological solution at 40 $cmH_{2}$O of pressure which is the mean pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid for a seated patient. The needle is moved and when the dura is penetrated the force drop down thus stopping the needle movement. Both the maximum force and displacement are recorded and allow to describe the mechanism of dura penetration and to correlate it with dura structure and mechanical properties.
