| Description | The packaging of food products plays an important role, and absence of it can lead to fast deterioration of quality and safety of food products, which paves the way to massive commercial losses of valuable foodstuffs. The packaging industry consumes more than 42% of the polymers produced; among which, the share of food packaging industry is almost 50% of it (Rhim et al., 2013; Silvestre et al., 2011). Food packaging constitutes the largest demanding application of long-lived petrochemical-based polymeric product due to its flexibility, mechanical property, lightweight, low density, and economicity. It should withstand harsh conditions during transport, distribution, marketing, and storage (Anandharamakrishnan and Usha Kiran, 2014). During the last decades, there has been a strong motivation for replacing polymeric, non-biodegradable packaging material with biodegradable, eco-friendly polymers. Recently, the European Union has taken the initiative to reduce plastic litter in oceans, especially single-use plastics. As an alternative, the EU has started promoting the usage of bio-based polymers. Also, the proposal requires producers to cover the waste management and clean-up cost (EU, 2018).
