Description | Chapter 14 presents the capability of 30-m EO-1/Hyperion imagery for mapping benthic habitats. An encouraging result has been produced using this spaceborne hyperspectral sensor. However, a 30-m spatial resolution sensor cannot delineate small patches or linear reef features. Thus, NOAA, in partnership with other local and state agencies, mapped the reef benthic habitats in the Florida Reef Tract using the fine spatial resolution spaceborne sensor (Ikonos), aerial photography, and other surveyed data through a manual interpretation procedure. A reef-mapping product has been released, but updating this product is difficult because of the time-consuming and labor intensive manual work involved. Some of the maps are more than 20 years old. As demonstrated in Chapter 18, a combination of fine spatial resolution aerial photography, EO-1/Hyperion, and lidar can largely improve vegetation classification in species-level mapping in the coastal Everglades, as well as at land use land cover-level mapping in the central Everglades (Zhang et al., 2016). In this chapter, an integration of fine spatial resolution Ikonos imagery, EO-1/Hyperion imagery, and lidar bathymetry data was assessed to map reef benthic habitats at a detailed level.
