| Description | Biomass is the only natural, renewable, economic, and abundant carbon source that can serve as a potential substitute for fossil fuels. The bio-conversion of biomass into fuels, energy, and other beneficial by-products first requires a pre-treatment step, which not only dismantles complex biomass but also increases the accessibility of hydrolytic enzymes. In view of its importance, the present chapter discusses the prior art of biomass pre-treatment and liquefaction technologies that are essential for the production of liquid biofuels and other value-added chemicals. A brief introduction covering the importance of biomass pre-treatment and liquefaction for the production of fuels and energy over the usage of fossil fuels is covered along with the discussions around the fundamental and structural chemistry of the biomass feedstock. Along with this, various types of biomass pre-treatment processes are described in detail. This chapter also provides an in-depth understanding of hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass. In the last section of the chapter, different biomass liquefaction technologies are compared and we also suggest requisite modifications in the current processes which lead to sustainable biomass liquefaction.
