The president of the United Republic of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete gave a speech at the University of Boston to demonstrate how his country had managed ethnic and religious diversity by following in the footsteps of the Father of the Nation, Julius Nyerere. Muslims supported Julius Nyerere as the leader of Tanganyika National Union because he had studied in Britain and he knew how to deal with the British people. The right to have Kadhi courts has become one of the main topics in the Islamic Revivalism and Muslims' complaints against the government. The chapter details the relationship between religion and ethnic politics in Tanzania, highlighting critical questions being raised about Muslim representation in Tanzanian politics.
