| Description | Book Name: China's Governance Model |
| Abstract | This chapter presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses the question where China is heading politically by examining the major institutional changes in governance in China in the recent decades. It covers the related topic that has attracted tremendous attention called the China model of development. The central argument in the book is that pragmatic authoritarianism is emerging in China. Pragmatic authoritarianism involves pragmatic yet authoritarian forms of economic, social and political governance. Economically, pragmatic authoritarianism seeks to deliver robust economic growth through the state's mobilization of economic resources and its pursuit of economic reform. The book briefly reviews the debates on the China model that have been waged in Chinese and English among China scholars and observers. It discusses the debate on the political development and possibility of democratization in China in the Western literature with an overview of the Chinese and English literature on governance in China. This chapter presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book.
