| Description | In the past decade, excellent reviews have appeared in the literature relating to the chemistry and pharmacology of marijuana as well as to the determination by gas chromatography (GC) and/or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instrumentation of its natural constituents and their pyrolytic and metabolic products. With regard to its pharmacology, Casarett noted that “of the more than 30 cannabinoids present in cannabis resin, there is little doubt that the major psychoactive ingredient is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. In addition to the euphoria, referred to as the “high,” marijuana has a significant effect on short-term memory in that it seems to affect the ability to concentrate rather than interfering with the retrieval of information already present in the memory. The more common pharmacological effects of marijuana include the increase in heart rate, conjunctival vascular congestion, dryness of the mouth and throat, and excessive hunger, especially for sweets.
