| Description | Nonvolatile and thermally labile mixture components that cannot be isolated by gas chromatography can often be separated by using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) or supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). In contrast to GC, infrared-transparent atomic and homonuclear diatomic mobile phases are inappropriate for HPLC and SFC separations. Unfortunately, infrared absorptions for common HPLC and SFC mobile phases often overlap eluent absorbance bands, making detection and identification difficult. It is mobile phase opacity that is primarily responsible for the lack of general-purpose HPLC/FT-IR and SFC/FT-IR interfaces possessing sensitivity comparable to GC/FT-IR.
