| Description | What is the relationship between globalization and national news markets? This chapter explores the United States and Aotearoa New Zealand as two national case studies. The US news ecology is shaped by commercial media companies and a small role for nonprofit and publicly funded organizations. In contrast, New Zealand's small media market includes a more noteworthy role for publicly funded news. Interviews with journalists who work in (and between) the two countries demonstrate how these different contexts have shaped their careers and the types of journalism they are able to pursue. The chapter argues that, while globalizing technologies, transnational corporations, and NGOs have a significant role in structuring the media ecology, the state still facilitates, manages, and coordinates media markets. If there is a global media system, this system is constituted by heterogeneous media sectors that operate in specific national contexts. Book Name: Journalism and Digital Labor |
