| Description | The first work carried out (inevitably in vitro) with a view to obtaining information about latex catabolism used the respiratory quotient (RQ) $(CO_{2}$ $produced/O_{2}$ consumed) measured by means of manometric techniques.$ ^{39} ^{,} ^{457} ^{,} ^{484}$ The RQ is really only meaningful when mitochondria are present, as only these are able simultaneously to produce $CO_{2}$, (Krebs cycle) and to take in $O_{2}$ (cytochrome chain) which are truly respiratory phenomena. The almost complete absence of mitochondria in the latex collected during tapping$ ^{57} ^{,} ^{115} ^{,} ^{154}$ thus explains the very low oxygen consumption in vitro (Figure 1),$ ^{484}$ and the very high values of QR (10 < QR < 100) found under these conditions, with or without added substrate (sucrose, glucose, fructose, acetate, etc.).$ ^{39} ^{,} ^{457} ^{,} ^{484}$ Oxygen consumption is caused essentially by the functioning of various oxidases associated mainly with subcellular particles.$ ^{230}$ This is the case for the peroxidase$ ^{142}$ and NADH-quinone reductase$ ^{57} ^{,} ^{115}$ associated with the lutoids and the o-diphenoloxidase connected with the Frey-Wyssling particles.$ ^{142}$ Book Name: Physiology of Rubber Tree Latex |
