| Description | Anthropogenic actions like urbanization, industrialization, and modern agricultural practices involving persistent pesticides have led to the rapid contamination of freshwater sources. These contaminated sources consist of various contaminants ranging from organic matter, pathogens, recalcitrants like pesticides and dyes, and, most importantly, heavy metal ions. Conventional treatment processes like electrocoagulation, coagulation-flocculation, adsorption, chemical precipitation, advanced oxidation processes, photocatalysis, ion-exchange, etc. exist. However, due to each process's specific action towards a particular class of contaminants, it makes the process selective, and several processes have to be performed in tandem to obtain complaint water output. Thin-film composites (TFC) and multi-layered membranes offer a versatile solution towards sustainable reuse of these sources while separating a multitude of contaminants from wastewater. This chapter highlights the fabrication, current use, and critical challenges of thin-film composites, dynamic composites, and multi-layered strategies used in wastewater treatment while examining the upscaling and sustainability associated with these processes.
