| Description | Journal: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry Norwegian psychiatry has been in the forefront in implementing supportive psychotherapy within treatment programmes for severely disturbed patients. The dichotomy between explorative and supportive techniques is no longer considered as valid. The quality of the treatment relation per se seems to have great impact on the outcome of therapy. Doctors specializing in psychiatry usually have severely disturbed patients in therapy during their education. In order to give legitimitation to the education of psychotherapy that is a part of the educational programme to become a specialist, supervisors in psychotherapy should encourage residents to present their relations to severely disturbed patients in the supervision. A stronger implementation of psychotherapy with sererely disturbed patients should be considered in the educational programme of the supervisors.
