| Description | A cursory examination of the relevant literature provides ample evidence that fatigue is a problem for the driving public. Estimates of the contribution of driver fatigue to total traffic accidents vary from 4% (Treat, 1980) to 25% (Maycock, 1995). A questionnaire survey conducted by Tilley, Erwin, and Gianturco (1973) illustrated drivers' awareness of the fatigue problem. Survey results revealed that 64% of respondents had experienced fatigue on the road. In addition, 7% of the subject sample claimed to have had a traffic accident due to fatigue.
