| Description | Journal: New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics The Tui Mine, located at the southern end of the Coromandel Peninsula, occurs in extensively hydrothermally altered andesitic rocks. Two structurally simple lead-zinc lodes, the Champion and the Ruakaka, strike NE and E-W respectively and diverge with depth. Both lodes occur along dominantly normal faults, and consist of a quartz-cemented wall rock breccia, within which is a younger and narrower brecciated zone cemented with sulphides and quartz. Textural relationships of ore and gangue suggest the following sequence of events: fault movement and brecciation, cementation with quartz and minor pyrite and chalcopyrite, renewed fault movement and brecciation, deposition of galena and sphalerite, deposition of a second generation of pyrite and chalcopyrite, deposition of marcasite and chalcopyrite with minor tetrahedrite, and deposition of kaolinite and traces of cinnabar in some of the remaining cavities. Intermittent brecciation and cementation by quartz took place during sulphide deposition. The geographic distribution of ore and the variation in metal ratios within the lodes suggest that the mineralisation occurs along ore shoots which rake 60° SW in the Champion lode and are probably near horizontal in the Ruakaka lode. Ore deposition took place preferentially where the dip of the lodes is steep, and the altered wall rocks are highly competent owing to silicification. The highly competent silicified wall rocks generally occur where lodes are intersected by steeply dipping, E-W-striking, quartz-cemented fractured zones. The intersection between the lodes and the quartz-cemented fracture zones is parallel to the ore shoots, and, in one place coincides with a well-defined group of ore shoots. |
