| Description | Journal: Nordisk Psykiatrisk Tidsskrift This article presents the results of a survey study concerning mental health conditions in a sample of students at the University of Oslo. The response rate to the questionnaire was 21.8% of the students reported that during a mean studyperiod of 3 1/2 years they had been in need of help with mental problems. Women reported this need significantly more often than men did. The need was more often reported in higher age-groups than in lower, and there were marked differences between the faculties. The students in the social sciences reported most need for such help (33%). 10% of the students in the sample reported that during the same period they had been in touch with the mental health service in a broader sense; 7% had received treatment from the more specific psychiatric service. Women were significantly more frequent users than men, and there was increasing use with higher age. Again students in the social sciences reported most frequent use (17%). On the basis of the high response rate (92%) our findings can be generalized to be valid for all the students at the University at the given time (1981). We have thereby got information of the students' total need for help with mental problems and their total use of the mental health service not only at the students' health service on the campus, but also in the community. We have also got knowledge about how need and use differ on some demographic variables such as sex, age, and faculty membership. Mental health, Students, Health service. |
