| Description | The two-party norm is taken for granted in American politics. As children, Americans learn of the genius of the Founding Fathers, the three branches of government, and the history of the Democrats and Republicans. As adults, Americans assume that, like the air we breathe, the two major parties are as necessary and fundamental to our system as the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. That Americans are socialized to an unquestioning acceptance of the two-party norm makes the issue of third parties in American politics all the more intriguing. What are we to make of third parties in two-party America? What role do they play in American politics? The bedrock principles of American politics are coalition and compromise. The Constitution's mandate to elect a single chief executive every four years is one of our system's most powerful inducements to coalition building and compromise. Only by reflecting the nation's social and ideological diversity can a major party hope to build a national coalition large enough to win the White House.
