Description	Every material is characterized by an intrinsic cohesive strength (We) . The strength (work required to induce failure) of a system defined by two adherends joined by an adhesive will be limited by the weakest link in this sandwich. Four independent material properties will ultimately determine the strength of this trilayered composite: Wc1: cohesive strength of adherend 1 Wc2: cohesive strength of adherend 2 Wa1: adhesive strength or energy required to separate the adhesive from adherend 1 . Wa2: adhesive strength or energy required to separate the adhesive from adherend 2 When the optimal adhesion promoter is incorporated into the system, both Wa 1 and Wa2 are greater than or equal to Wc1 and Wc2, respectively.
