| Description | Spectral parametric models are used to describe the energy distribution of both swell and wind sea wave components, into the frequency and directional domains and to assess the ship motions by means of transfer functions computed by linear strip theory. The objective is investigating the influence of the spectral models on the ship responses, studying the significance of the wave climate on such differences, so that more suited spectral models can be recommended according to the areas the vessels are designed to operate at. It is shown that traditional approaches are acceptable for the evaluation of extreme events, while in milder conditions larger differences are found, suggesting to consider the adoption of more complete models for estimating operability and voyage planning. Generally, more marked variability is observed in roll, pointing out the need of a more accurate description of the wave energy in this case.
