| Description | The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice is situated in four adjacent townhouses in the centre of Glasgow, a city with diverse social demographics and a high rate of cancer. Providing clinical, emotional, social and spiritual care for patients who have a progressive, life-threatening illness, the hospice has a conventional medical model. The introduction of an innovative arts project in 2003 reflected a commitment to develop new therapeutic initiatives and to investigate the potential of a needs-led approach. Arts in Palliative Care provided cultural and creative opportunities that would otherwise be inaccessible to patients. Initiating from a twelve-week pilot proposed by Glasgow City Council and established arts organisation Art in Hospital, it filled a gap in arts provision within palliative care in Glasgow, drawing on the combined experience of participants, healthcare and arts professionals, and local authority cultural and leisure services. The project provided an important bridge between two care models in the redesign of day services, and responding to patient feedback, the hospice facilitated its continuation and integration to a multidisciplinary referral procedure and documentation. The following accounts reveal the pivotal role of participants in shaping the arts project and subsequent developments in hospice facilities, staff education and recruitment. A day services patient and participant of the arts project, John Lieser recounts his personal journey, illustrating the value of user involvement for the participant and hospice alike.
