| Description | Western Europe has traditionally pursued what can be called the classical model for state intervention in religious matters. 'In this model, religious communities and individuals enjoy extended freedom to have their own rules for personal behaviour and internal organisation.'$ ^{1}$ The state intervention in religious practices is limited to what is absolutely necessary. Lagoutte and Lassen rightly point out that recently there has been another tendency in European debate according to which religious traditions should no longer experience this privileged absence of state interference. In fact, the human rights community is caught in heated debates on state intervention in such religious practices which are incompatible with the norms of society at large … Among potential discrepancies between religious practices and human rights are issues concerning gender, family and children, as for example headscarves and other religious signs, female and male circumcision, ritual slaughter, religious divorce, and homosexuality.$ ^{2}$ Book Name: Law, Religion, and Freedom |
