| Abstract | Performance analysis has a relevant role in network-architecture design, protocol selection and network tuning by providing estimates of network behavior in terms of throughput, response time and network utilization. There are two main approaches in system performance evaluation: the first uses measurement techniques, the second is based on a representation of the behavior of a system via a model.$ ^{17} ^{,} ^{21} ^{,} ^{22} ^{,} ^{25} ^{,} ^{36}$ The solution to the model gives the performance indices of the model which in turn are an estimate of the indices of the system. The measurement techniques are applied to a real system, considering both real and artificial load configurations, or otherwise to a prototype of the system. The advantage of measurement techniques over using a model is that real system performances are obtained rather than those of a model of that system. Yet, measurement techniques do have their disadvantages. One, for instance, is the need to have a system that is actually functioning (either the real system or a prototype of it), and which can thus be measurable.$ ^{17} ^{,} ^{22} ^{,} ^{24}$ Using a model, on the other hand, allows us to study the system in each phase of its life cycle, or rather in each design, development, set-up and modification stage. In this chapter we focus on the use of modeling methods and techniques in computer-networks performance evaluation. Specifically, we concentrate on communication-system models defined by using the queueing formalism (i.e., single server queues,$ ^{26} ^{,} ^{27}$ polling models,$ ^{40}$ and queueing networks$ ^{22} ^{,} ^{28}$ ). Evaluating system performances via models consists of two steps: i) defining the system model, and ii) solving the model using various solution techniques to get the model performance indices that make up an estimate of the indices of the system. |
