| Description | This chapter provides the reader with a basic introduction to the elements that affect the detection and processing of auditory warning signals. First, a short history of auditory alarms and warnings is presented to give readers an idea of how auditory warnings were developed and used. Next, different types of auditory warnings are defined and described, including incidental and intentional, speech and nonspeech, and simple and complex warnings. To give readers a working knowledge of how auditory warnings operate, the elements of sound and the physical parameters of sound signals are discussed. A key element in warning signals is the ability to be heard and perceived; thus, the important elements affecting warning signal perception and detection are covered. The use of hearing protection is briefly discussed. Last, auditory warning design standards, recommendations, and guidelines are summarized. Book Name: Handbook of Warnings |
