| Description | AS we know, primary effluent contains food. This food may include things like milk, juice, or even spaghetti sauce. In the trickling filter we grow bugs cm the media to eat this food. In activated sludge the bugs are added directly into the primary effluent. In the trickling filter, air was not a problem. As long as the media wasn't clogged, the air could get down to the bugs. In activated sludge we don't have that luxury. We have to add air. This is often done with a blower. The air is put into the tank through air diffusers located along the bottom of the aeration tank. The turbulence in the water from the air also mixes the bugs with the food. Thus the air being added provides both the needed oxygen and the required mixing to put the bugs and the food together.
