| Description | Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres have increasingly become the focus of research efforts in the scientific community and pharmaceutical industry. Their application as drug delivery vehicles has risen in line with the expanding biotechnology sector and the promise of new drugs discovered in the wake of the human genome project and proteomics. Commercial formulations employing poly(lactic acid) or poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) matrices for drug delivery are growing in number, and this is expected to continue (Table 7.1). In this chapter we will focus on the encapsulation of recombinant DNA and protein drugs, although it should be borne in mind that there are many formulations of small organic molecules encapsulated in polyester microspheres.
