| Description | Hydrocarbon contamination is among the most widely spread environmental problems in soil, sediment and groundwater and range from crude oil spills to leakages of underground storage tanks. Current physical and chemical remediation methods can be very energy and chemical intensive, while bioremediation process is slow due to the limited availability of electron acceptor. Microbial electrochemical remediation uses electrodes to serve as an inexhaustible electron acceptor for in situ hydrocarbon degradation that carries unique advantages for environmental remediation. This chapter discusses the principles and applications of bioelectrochemical systems (BES) that have been used in hydrocarbon contaminated site remediation. It provides a comprehensive review on BES design, materials, microbiology, mechanisms and applications, and it lists many examples that demonstrate how BES can effectively remove hydrocarbons from contaminated sites and can generate current as a proxy monitoring tool. The chapter also discusses the environmental factors that affect BES performance on site, and it provides a perspective on degradation mechanisms and system scale-ups. While most BES studies focus on wastewater treatment but face great challenges in poor treatment rate and current output; this chapter explains why BES can be better suited for environmental remediation. While this is a fast-moving area, it is promising to see from the chapter that field pilot has been conducted, and fundamental degradation mechanisms are being investigated.
