| Description | This chapter examines the selected research concerning the play of handicapped children. It addresses two preliminary questions. First, and more generally, why should children's play be subjected to serious inquiry? Second, and more specifically, why should the play of handicapped children investigated? The study of handicapped children's play can provide theoretical validation for the play of normal children. The study of physically handicapped children has generally been dominated by a medical orientation. The chapter aims to synthesize the research findings of the diverse literature and make suggestions for research directions. It reviews the observational and intervention play literature concerning intellectually impaired children. Moreover, a number of researchers have demonstrated that training children to play in social-pretense fashion can lead to gains in cognitive, social, and social-cognitive development. The children were divided into three age groups (approximately 3½, 4, and 4½-years-old). The analysis revealed that the oldest speech-delayed children did not engage in symbolic play frequently as the same-aged normal children. Book Name: Children's Play |
